Sarracenia is a carnivorous plant that grows wild in the southeastern areas of the United States, where the plants are found in wet, swampy areas with a lot of sunlight. Sarracenia is a perennial-like plant that withers in winter and sprouts again in spring. The plant blooms every year. The more light the plant receives, the stronger will be its colour.
Sarracenia catches insects on its pitcher-like leaves, which are called trumpets. The trumpets produce nectar along the edge of the pitcher top, and this attracts, sedates and kills the insects that settle there. The trumpets catch an incredible number of flies, wasps and other insects in summer and autumn.
Sarracenia is ideal for planting out in marshy soil/sphagnum moss, or in pots and the like. The sphagnum should be slightly coarse and unfertilised. Pots should be placed in frost-free spaces, or wrapped lightly, if left outdoors all year round. Watering should be sparse.
Location: Indoors or outdoors. Can tolerate temperatures down to around -20 °C.
Cultivation: No fertiliser, plenty of light, no direct sunlight, keep evenly moist and preferably water with rainwater.
